I was out at the mall today and somebody had a nice sportbike centered in a
car parking space.
Because the parking space was so desirable (close to the mall entrance), I
put my motorcycle off to the side of his and a little ahead and left him
maybe an 18 inch gap so he could easily mount his bike and back out. I also
left my steering unlocked so if he felt he HAD to move my bike he could
(although I didn't see why that would be necessary).
How bad is it (as far as manners) to see a parking spot you want to share
and just share it (with a stranger)?
Thanks for any insight, Datesfat.

I don't know how bad it is, but I will not park my bike in a car spot
with another bike unless I am riding with the owner of that bike. I'm
not going to take a chance on some stranger getting ticked off at me
(regardless of how much space I leave him/her) and taking out his/her
ire on my poor, defenseless motorcycle. (BTW I don't think an 18-inch
gap is particularly generous!)
I would venture a guess that it is a rare thing, as I've only had one
or two occasions in my 30+ years riding when I've returned to my bike
in a car spot and found another motorcycle sharing my spot, and while
I didn't do anything to their bike, I wasn't particularly happy to see
them parked that close to me.
Dedicated motorcycle parking at motorcycle-centric events is a totally
different story, we all share car spots willy-nilly in those cases.

So Chas. is bi-polar moody?
Who knew?

I've never parked in a space occupied by an unattended bike--at a group
ride when a bunch of us arrive together, yes. And I agree that 18" is
not terribly generous. The dedicated motorcycle spaces I've seen are
about half the width of car spaces. If you look a little above the
center of

you'll see some dedicated motorcycle spaces in a public parking lot in
Quebec, and some regular spaces below them.

Seconded, 100%.
