New development ...
Was out at the mall today again. Discovered two sportbikes that were parked
in a space nose to tail to the left side of the space. Their intent was
CLEARLY to allow room for another motorcycle or two.
So, I parked my croozer to the right side and forward so that even a fourth
motorcycle could fit in.
I snapped a photo:

My croozer is the bike to the right.
This was the first time I've ever seen two motorcycles in a space in a
configuration CLEARLY designed to invite other motorcycles.
BTW, I'll pull the photo down next time I clean up my website or do editing
work. It should be there for at least a week, but no guarantees after that.

Looks to me like they were trying to put their bikes as far away as
possible from opening cage doors

YES. There is no clear intent to leave a space for another
bike. Having just returned from a multi-week trip across
the USA, I have found that there is some sort of common
passive-aggressive behavior, people parking cars and trucks
like to deliberately straddle the line into your bike's
parking space, so many times I would do exactly as those
bikes did, park against a curb and as far away from the
line as possible.
Even in a mostly empty parking lot, one time I parked well
away from everyone else, a dumb shit pulled up in a crew
cab truck and opened his drivers door, hitting my right hand
saddle bag. While I was standing there.

Now that would piss me off.
Like you I often park well away from the congestion. Usually it means
walking less than 50 meters to be clear of the vehicles jammed in door
to door.
On one occasion a mini van pulled in beside me, as I was gearing up
getting ready to leave. Bear in mind we were at least 50 meters from
any other vehicle but she chose to park right beside me. As soon as
she parked she asked me to turn off my bike because it was disturbing
her baby. I didn't even respond. I just put on my helmet and rode
away.
I try to park in the center of a stall, hopefully clear of car doors,
as much to protect my bike as to allow room for folks to get in and
out of their vehicle. I have seen small cars try to share a stall if
a bike is parked too far over to one side.
