I believe it because I witnessed a very similar event.  A man who owned a
large tract of land invited friends to "scramble" (motocross) on it and to
invite their friends too.  Soon upwards of 100 riders were showing up every
weekend. there were even venders and lunchwagons.  That was too much for
LAPD.  People were having too much fun.  Worse yet, they were doing it for
free!  So, as "?" describes, a mob of cops descended on the place and one
with a bull horn announced "This is an illegal
assembly and you are all trespassing!"  At that point the owner, who was
there riding himself, confronted the police with the same "... I own this
land and there people are my guests!"  The cops had to back off on their
demand that everybody leave and resort to harassment  .... which proved
effective.  Eventually most just quit going.

Another reason to avoid California.
