Supposedly, Myrtle Beach has $3M in its coffers to discourage future
Bike Weeks. While I could have thought a locality would welcome 50,000
biker types and their frames of rolling thunder with fun games like
parking lot burnouts, vaseline smearing contests, hog the boulevard,
and other wholesome family entertainment, it seems the locals feel
differently.
I first heard of this from a friend who just returned this week from a
week's vacation in Myrtle. I didn't think anymore about it until the
following started popping up on websites/forums:
===============
Myrtle Beach Bike Week is in danger of being cancelled. Myrtle Beach
city council passed a property tax increase and rezoning law to put a
stop to the bike weeks. If the City of Myrtle Beach can get Horry
county on board it could really put an end to it. The city of MB seems
to be deadset on it, but Horry county is not on board yet. Let's try
to keep it that way!
Contact Liz Gilliland of the Horry County Council and let her know
what you think:

I'm torn. If I lived there, I'd probably not want it twice a year, but
it's a tradition of sorts now and easier to make for many than going
to Daytona.

Some posters elsewhere are suggesting this action is directed towards
Black bike week, but will effectively put an end to everything but the
Fall rally.
Wanna put an end to Bike Weeks everywhere? Outlaw trailers! :)

Actually, it might help. When I asked why we couldn't reserve rooms at our
usual motel in Cherokee some years back, the owner said that the tribe had
decided to squelch the rally because so many trailers smothered all the
parking. Dude rents a room then takes up 3 or 4 parking spaces for his
cage, trailer and bikes. Gal remembered us and gave us rooms 'cuz we rode
in.

It's the 1 %'rs, and the wanna-be 1%'rs. Plus the general
slobs who think it's OK to trash someone elese's town for a week or
two every year. The policing and clean-up costs exceeded the extra
revenues that A FEW businesses got ( while others basically got shut
down for a week, like the golf course, etc ).

Really? A local hotelier estimated the Horry County Government's take
for the two weeks just from the accommodation tax at $6-8 million.
His comments were there was no way for the county's businesses
(hotels, restaurants, mom & pop businesses, etc.) to make up the loss
of income if they did manage to kill the rally's.
He then proceeded to remind everyone that all those businesses had
local residents as employees who depend on the income from the rally's
to pay bills.
A side comment he made was if they really wanted to see an impact was
look 70 miles to the west where Darlington was fighting every year to
keep their May NASCAR race. Then imagine them losing it and the
impact it'd have on May in Horry County. If they needed proof all you
have had to do was look at Labor Day weekend. Schools opened earlier.
Darlington moved the race from Labor Day Weekend to November. Horry
County (Myrtle Beach) is dead from mid August till Golfers start
arriving in November along with the NASCAR fans for the race.
In a matter of a few years Labor Day weekend went form being one of
the biggest of the year to just another weekend.
Extra law enforcement and trash cleanup is cheap in the overall scheme
of things.
