Yes, there are SOME businesses that make out, and some that
shut down for two weeks.

His opinion of SOME businesses.

So do all the businesses that DON'T cater to that particular
event.

Not when EVERYONE is paying for it, while A FEW make some
extra money. It's 'cheap for 'the few', but expensive at the bottom
line.

And, as usual, you're an idiot.
No matter *what* sort of event a town holds to attract outsiders, it
will *always* put more money into some pockets than it does into
others, and -outside of an egalitarian society such as Cuba's- there
is absolutely no way this can be avoided.
But money that is spent in a town at *some* businesses tends to *stay*
in that town being recycled from one business and one pocket to the
next. It doesn't just lie around in a few bank accounts. (This is what
Reagan called [unfortunate term] the "trickle down" effect, and you
wouldn't want to call *him* a liar, now would you?)
So; if an event draws six to eight million dollars into your local
economy, and the total public outlay comes to say two million for
police overtime and so forth, the town's total economy has still
profited by several million dollars, which, even in this day and age,
is not to be sneezed at.
But I guess we shouldn't be surprised about your dog-in-the-manger
attitude. It's just what one would expect from a guy who hates lane-
splitters because it drives him nuts to see anyone else getting ahead
while he's stuck in traffic.

You forget, Florida is full of old people who like it quiet and boring
and who live on social security and pensions and don't care about the
economy anyways.

If I recall correctly, old farts are not much of a factor in
Mertyl Beach, SC. There are however quite a few transplants
moving into the area who don't know the background of MB and
would like it to be just like where they came from instead
of where they are.
