Traded in the 04 Ultra for an 09 Ultra in Vivid Black with ABS and
security.
This one is going to remain mostly stock.
Maybe a stage 1 intake and free flowing mufflers (Rineharts) down the road
but for now, bone stock except for luggage rack, hiway pegs, garage door
opener and lowering kit.
The handling, suspension and overall reliability and gas mileage got me
hooked.

Yikes! Bob, you went the whole 9 yards!! Congrats!!
Stage 1 at least, it gives you a bit more low end grunt and cools her
down a tad. ...and besides the Rineharts just sound soooo freaking
nice. You know you gotta!
Really, congrats! They are really nice bikes this year.

Thanks.
Yes, it was the whole nine yards but I did already have an Ultra so there
is no way to go but down from there.
The problem with the cooling down is that itis also enrichening.
That leads to poorer mileage while giving better performance.
I might still do it but that's down the road a piece.
The Rineharts would be my choice too.

Bob, I didn't notice any major change in mileage when I did my stage 1
on my 07. I'm still on the + side of 40mpg. But, the difference in low
end torque and especially from 2000rpm to 2400rpm made a huge
difference for me on the 07 for 6th gear. I know the 09s are geared
slightly lower up there, so that may not be as important. But I vote
for the Stage 1!
I would like pics posted when you can!
I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

I posted a few pictures over in alt.binaries.pictures.motorcycles.harley.
I plan to get some better shots in the daylight today if I can.
I will probably do it eventually but for now I want to see just how good
the mileage can get before I do it.
I've been told that the 96" has stressed the flywheel as far as it should
go and doing 6th ghear roll-ons isn't advised. I'll just downshift.
The final gear ratio in both bikes is about the same but 1 through 5 are
all geared lower due to lower gearing in the output and drive pulleys.
One of the guys at work is getting 240 miles (400km) to a tank so yes, that
is about right. One of the factor that could have caused his friends to
lose mileage is trying to use all the power available.
Another cow-orker got about 250 or 260 miles on a tank. (425km)
He is scheduled for a stage 1 but I'd like to wait and see.
One thing is for sure, these new touring bikes are far better than the
older ones. I miss the raw power of my 95" '04 bike but the ride is just so
much nicer.
If I ever do that type of engine work again it will be on a lighter bike
and I know a lot more now about where the power lies than I did last time.
