My old helmet was worn out and the visor broke off on the freeway a ways
from home (riding a naked cruiser) so I had to buy a replacement in a
hurry. I went into the nearest dealer and found a Shoei RF-1100 for
$400. Didn't do any research but wow...what a nice helmet. Are all new
helmets this good? The difference between it and my old helmet is night
and day. The RF-1100 blocks out an amazing amount of noise, has a slick
vent system, fits like a glove, and has much better (wider) viewing
angles. Wish I would have bought it sooner.

If the difference is that much, I wonder how old your old helmet was.... I
replace them after 3 years max.

I've had several models of helmets over the years, but nowadays I
stick with the Shoeis. To me they are superior to all others in terms
of all day comfort, noise suppression, graphics, air flow, and fit and
finish.
I do kind of like the non-ratcheting shields on the Arais, but they
are a far bigger PIA to change.
I've read articles where others score as well, but donning a lid and
riding around the block before donning the next isn't a good way of
testing IMO. I want them to wear them each for 12 hours straight then
yield their opinion.

My old helmet was a Shoei too. At the time I got it, it was considered
to be a good helmet but this new one has it beat six ways from Sunday.
The thing I am liking the best is that the new helmet tracks straight at
high speed so your head doesn't buffet. Never noticed that before until
it's gone. Also, the optical qualities of the face shield are amazingly
good...so good that I keep reaching to lower the shield...and it's
already down. Rode it in the rain this morning for the first time and
it worked great in that with no fogging.

Yeah, true, but hard to do.

How many times had you replaced the shield on your old helmet?
