I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle, and figured if get some use out of
my Usenet account and ask here :). Basically, what would be a good bike
for a beginner 19 year old male? I know nothing about what would be a
good "starter" bike. I'm not looking for something super expensive, just
something for recreational doing around town and possibly on the
highway.

Expanding on above, nyone that tells you a large displacement bike is
the way to go is an idiot.
Start small and cheap. A 250 or 500 will easily go fast enough to get
you in trouble. Any first bike you get should have as little in the way
of fancy plastic as possible, as you WILL drop it. Not a matter of if,
but when. Take care of them, and the small used bikes hold almost all
their value as well.

Yup, I'm from New York. I frequent the Thruway (I 90) for school. Just
want to get a bike so I don't spend so much money on gas for my car when
I travel around town. And motorcycles are awesome

While I fully agree that "motorcycles are awesome", lemme start by
saying that I am *NOT* trying to talk you out of getting a motorcycle,
but those who say they are buying a motorcycle simply to save money on
gasoline have not fully researched the idea.
Before you go off buying a motorcycle to save money on gas, there are a
few other expenses that you will need to consider
At your age, motorcycle insurance alone will pay for a *LOT* of
gasoline for you car.
Tyres for motorcycles are more expensive and don't last near as long as
car tyres.
The initial outlay for the *PROPER* protective gear can be quite steep
and, again, can pay for a whole lot of gasoline.
It is possible to do it "on the cheap".
You can get a fly-by-night insurance company to give you a cheap policy
but that's exactly what you will get, a cheap policy and probably not
very good coverage. Good luck at getting them to pay a claim. Even
better luck at them not dumping you on the first claim.
You *could* get the cheapest tyres you can find (are they still
ChinShin's?) but you will not have a very *SAFE* tyre.
You could get a real cheap helmet and just wear jeans and a T-Shirt for
'protection' but the first time you go down you will really wish you had
better gear.
These three are just the first three that popped into my head. I'm
sure there are more that I'm not thinking of right now.
