"Researchers said convertible drivers should consider wearing some form of
ear protection, as motorcyclists do."

That's odd...motorcyclists are goood sheep and would never violate a
law that says they can't wear earplugs or similar. Would we?

No state prohibits earplugs, with the possible exception of VA, but
even their law is written vaguely and subject to interpretation.  I
doubt it is enforced for earplugs.  VA traffic laws are a whole topic
unto themselves.

There are a few states that prohibit helmet speakers (which includes
earphones), among which many allow exceptions for "communication
only", or for 1 ear only.  http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp
is a good resource for this sort of thing.

MA and RI even prohibit POSSESSION of a helmet with speakers in it.
What a fine bunch of idiots!

You'd be wrong. MOST states do not allow the wearing of ear plugs
while riding...or ear buds for that matter. Same as the cars....not
that it ever stopped me. They can go deaf, me I'm protecting my
hearing adn they can fuck off if they don't like me for protecting
myself as can the rest of the world.

I think you may be simply mistaking ear plugs (plain old passive
hearing protection - whatever the type) with things that have wires
and can make sound (speakers, earphones, earbuds, whatever).

Again, no state with the possible exception of VA bans earplugs.

If you truly believe that is wrong, I recommend you back up your claim
with some evidence (no, not anecdotal).  You can start with
http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/state_moto_laws_pg1.pdf .  If you
determine that the AMA is wrong, I am sure they will appreciate you
correcting them.
