They had some radio talk-show this morning in Bakersfield, CA (KERN radio,
1410 AM) where the people calling in could ask a CHP officer questions.
They asked questions to Greg Williams of the CA CHP and he said that in
their routine checkpoint stops, that 5 out of 6 do not have driver's
licenses. He said in one month they impounded 700 cars and had 49 in the
previous night's checkpoints.
Seems high - but I don't (for some reason) doubt it. Fwiw, some years ago
the local head DA had expired tags on his Porsche. Dunno why they didn't
impound his. ;o\
Guess I better buy a beater bike in case I get hit...or run off the road.
Get hit around here and they just take off <damhik! 2X!!>..

Yeah but how many people cruise past the check point(s) in a month?
500,000? Afterall, LA is a great big freeway.
Then again, stopping people at 0200 might net all the folks who lost their
license to a previous DUI.

I would find it very hard to believe that 5 out of 6 drivers don't
have licenses. It might be that cops are selective in who they pull
over in these checkpoints.
Still, we have laws here that you can't renew a driver's license or
vehicle registration without showing proof of insurance, yet between
1/4 and 1/3 of drivers have no insurance.

The insurance industry pushed through laws requiring mandatory insurance to
register a vehicle, but still try to add on "uninsured motorist" coverage.
Since they did a poor job in their scheme and made rates impractical for
many (Vs. things like food and medicine), does that make them liable for the
existence of uninsured motorists?

Of course not. Society at large should pay for everyone's car
insurance, aka Shrillary's 'It take a village to drive a car'.
