In the motorcycle scenes starting about 20 minutes into the movie (starting
first with the person following James' car at time offset at 20:55 and
ending with the motorcycle jump), I noticed that:

a)The motorcycle has two lever controls, which I'd normally assume are brake
and clutch, BUT

b)Both the bad man following Mr. Bond and Mr. Bond after he violently takes
the motorcycle use only two fingers on the "clutch" and never seem to
operate it.

c)When Mr. Bond accelerates to do the jump, there is no clutch motion
consistent with trying to accelerate.

Questions:

A)Did anyone else notice this?

B)Does Hollywood have some super-safe way of filming motorcycle scenes where
they use lame bikes, perhaps with torque converters and a single gear?

I did notice in the car chases that they weren't going that fast and they
added in dramatic sound, i.e. the sound of a car going 90 MPH when it is
going about 40 MPH.  This is all standard stuff and naturally to help ensure
the safety of the crew and cast.

But what is with the motorcycle?

Thanks for any insight.

Not in that specific movie, but it happens a lot.

It's fairly easy to upshift a motorcycle without using the clutch.
Downshifting can be done as well, but it takes more skill.

"Bad man" does use the clutch when he pushes the bike around the accident
and when he is stopped before James punches him.  The film is cut so that
it coincidentally does not show the bike at times when a gear change is
made.

Most people use the throttle to accelerate, not the clutch ;).  When the
scene cut to the jump it was already in the gear needed.

Motorcycles (and cars) are sometimes filmed with a camera looking backwards
from a tow vehicle either pulling the cycle itself or having it mounted on
a trailer.  This is for safety [1] and it keeps the subject a fixed
distance from the camera so it stays in focus while moving.

[1] Outside shots of vehicles where you cannot really see the star often
utilize a professional driver in their place.  I'm not familiar with their
union rules, but that may be a factor.

  "Clutch motion"??

Who needs "clutch motion" to accelerate?  All I do is roll on the
throttle...

Most people when they roll on the throttle ... just out of habit ... would
have the fingers of the left hand positioned over the clutch handle in
anticipation of going to the next gear.  His body language was wrong.  I'm
guessing that jump was done in second gear.

The most likely explanation I guess is that Mr. Craig was given instructions
just to run the bike to a certain point off camera.  For the next scene, it
was the stuntman doing the jump.
