That's pretty much what I think I'll do next time. Shipping is only 14
bucks so that's not a problem.

www.bidnapper.com You have several options. I pay a set amount for a number of
successful snipes. If I don't win, I don't lose a snipe.
It waits until the last 5 seconds or so and bids up to your maximum, but only
enough to win. It's great for when you don't have time to watch an auction to
the end, like one that ends in the middle of the night or while you're at work.
The added bonus is that nobody knows you're bidding until the auction is over.
They're less likely to run the bid up if they think they're the only ones
bidding. By the time they notice that you've bid, and throw in a counter bid,
it's too late.
The only time I've lost (and I'm on my second set of 20 snipes) is when somebody
else is using something similar and they have in a higher max than mine, or
somebody who is bidding openly has a higher max than mine. I have never lost an
auction that went for less than my max snipe.

Search Ebay for 'proxy bid'.

Stop it! All you are doing is driving up the price. Start bidding within a
minute of the auction closing.
