I've had an HP LaserJet 4 since 1992. I had to get a new roller kit
for it at some point, but the printer is still going strong.
I've relocated the LJ4 to work, and I've been using an HP InkJet at
home.
Anyway, I was out today buying ink cartridges for the InkJet, and they
cost me about $70 for the two of them. I was thinking that I'm just
spending too much to run the InkJet, so I went over to Staples and
picked up an HP LaserJet P2055DN for around $350. I had no idea what
I was getting.
I was absolutely amazed how much better printers have gotten in two
decades. Night and day. All of these differences struck me
immediately.
a)Network ready. Just plug in an Ethernet cable and do a little
configuration.
b)Low cost. My LJ4 cost $1000 20 years ago. Even without adjusting
for inflation, the new one is 1/3 the cost.
c)Print speed. The new one is several times as fast.
d)Double-sided printing: I can't believe it does that for $350.
e)Re-FLASHability: I updated the firmware as soon as I got it. I was
amazed how easy that process was.
Wow.
Things have changed.
