Wow ... with oil at over $139 today, it's clear that
the "SUV Nation" of gas-hawgs is dead, Dead, DEAD.
Won't be able to GIVE the things away ... unless maybe
you sell 'em as "storage sheds".
Clearly, the "American Chopper" folks need to revamp
a little bit and come out with "American Scooter" -
to reflect what may become the only affordable transport
availible to the average American.
So, how DO you chop a Vespa ? :-)

war talk with iran is boosting oil prices.
Speculators taking advantage of specific, targeted events, war talk being
one of them, is boosting oil prices.

Yep, that's a biggest part of the equation. Alas, it's also
the part of the equation LEAST within our abilities to address.
We can't order speculators in Singapore, Tokyo, Moscow or
in all those places at the same time to cease and desist their
profit-building schemes.
SO - we've gotta cut the cord, seperate ourselves from the
"international market" for awhile. That means pushing our
overall national consumption DOWN by about fifteen or twenty
percent - and quickly, before everyones savings run out.
Oh yea ... gotta declare an emergency and forbid having our
domestic oil sold abroad, even IF they could get more for
it in Bejing or Paris.
I advocate ultra-low-interest govt loans to consumers buying
high-efficiency vehicles - maybe up to $15,000-$18,000. That
way they can just PARK the SUV they're stuck paying on and
buy a "SmartCar" or whatever. Just take a thin slice off the
Iraq budget ... a measly gigabuck or two ... to pay for the
program.

Gas is cheap in comparison, considering it is a non renewable resource.
