So, while modifying my Super Glide, running through my head has been
the memory of an old magazine project bike that I dimly recalled from
my early years of riding, circa 1978~1982.
I remembered it as "Project Rational Harley" or something, and I
recall that the magazine basically removed many of the styling cues
that "personified" a Harley back then (and still do, for that matter)
and made it more of a "standard" motorcycle; perhaps even a
prototypical "Universal American Motorcycle" to counter the then-
prevailing UJM standard.
Anyway, it made enough of an impression on me that it stayed with me
for 30 years. Today I went looking to find it, and, surprisingly,
hit upon it right away; it's called "Highway 61" and was featured as
the cover bike in the November 1979 issue of Cycle Guide magazine:

I certainly don't like it as much now as I did back then, but I still
find it intriguing.
Your thoughts?

God, that's nice.
Tank looks exactly like an old Yamaha SR500 item.

iirc, it's from a Yamaha XS650 Special, the cruiser-esque version of
the Yamaha XS650 standard; i.e.:

Blimey. I wasn't far wrong, then.

I like it. It does look somewhat like a 'UJM' but to my eyes it's
much more appealing than the cruiser-slanted styling that most Harleys
favor. The one Harley I really like the looks of straight off the
showroom floor is the XR1200 in orange and black.
