Having once owned one of those "cute little scooters", I can tell you
that HD would have had a hit on their hands if they'd built 'em to the
same standards of fit, finish, and reliability that Honda was
producing at that time.
But they didn't, and as a result they didn't.

Got your " ass-hole" suit on today I see.
Got JUST the cure for that!!

You might compare that with the number of lives lost on 9-11. Or the
economic injury incurred from that event.
It would have been cheaper in both lives and money to just suffer
another 9-11 every six or seven years.

Would American patriots sell our military defective helmets and body

I've been hearing that for over half a century. That doesn't mean H-D will
never go under, just that despite all the predictions it hasn't yet. The
local Harley dealer no longer opens on Sunday nor stay open til 10pm but
he's here whilst all the other dealers save Victory are gone. Harley tried
selling smaller bikes for a while. Aeromacci 250s and 350s for example and
more recently Buells. Didn't work out.
OTOH maybe you are right. I see lots more scooters lately. I wonder how a
Harley scooter would sell.

Badge engineering. Bikes were built in Italy. Same with the Cagiva two-
stroke singles. Totally different thing to building it yourself.

I *still* think that was a shame. A Buell always struck me as the
sporting Harley that Harley should have built itself. Having a woeful
reliability record didn't help, mind - Buell had an embarrassing
number of recalls.

Depends if it was painted black and fitted with cowhorn bars and
tassels ;-)

Probably in numbers comparable to that of Buell motorcycles.
