It was 3rd gear, sorry. I tried it again last night, to make sure of the
accuracy of my post.

I don't often.
You're talking 5000 rpm with my HD Evo. I might hit that with the hammer
fully down, but certainly not as a general practice.

Consider the following table...

MPH Calculator
1993 HD FXR 1340 Evolution
------------------------------------------
RPM 1 2 3 4 5

Where I run it while street cruising (to answer your question)
-----------------------------------------------
2000 13.8 20.2 27.9 36.3 44.7
2500 17.2 25.3 34.9 45.4 55.8

Top RPM under typical lively street acceleration
Also, where I run it at highway cruising speeds in 4th and 5th gear
---------------------------------------------------------
3000 20.7 30.3 41.9 54.5 67.0
3500 24.1 35.4 48.9 63.6 78.2

Hammer down
I rarely go over 80MPH/4500RPM, and never go over
90MPH/5500RPM, ever (SE ignition rev limiter is 6000)
I got nothing to prove
(okay, so maybe once I hit 100/5000 on the interstate)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4000 27.6 40.4 55.8 72.6 89.3
4500 31.0 45.5 62.8 81.7 100.5
5000 34.5 50.5 69.8 90.8 111.7
5500 37.9 55.6 76.8 99.9 122.8

The advantage of the big twin is low end torque. My FXR 1340 Evo with EV27
cam, S&S carb and Cycle Shack M pipes and SE ignition should be making about
75HP/75ft-lbs. According to dyno charts for a similer build, 2300-3300 rpm
is the mid-power band at 70ft-lbs and right where I run it on the street.
Max torque is from 3700 to 4300 rpm at 75ft-lbs, which is very spirited
acceleration. Above that there's loss of torque as the horsepower rises to
maximum, and it becomes all about top speed.

As I said, I rarely go above 4500, unless I'm trying to stay well into the
max torque band while up shifting onto the highway from a dead stop. As you
can see from the above table, the drop in rpm between gears is roughly 1000
rpm (+/- 100), so I gotta hit 4500 for instant max torque on the next higher
gear.

HTH. It took me several months to figure out my V Twin to the point that I
can "feel" the table above. Take some time and learn your motor.
