My girlfriend and I were going to go out Tuesday night to a movie and dinner but
there just wasn't anything showing in the local theaters that excited either of
us. We decided to just stay in, cook something and then catch something on Pay
Per View. "What do you want to eat?", she asked.

"I've got a rack of Angus beef ribs I can bring."

Anyway, I wanted to ride my motorcycle down to her house since she lives in the
next town and the 52 MPG my Silverwing gets was the point of learning to ride.
The problem was the rack of ribs was a little on the long side. It was vacuum
packed so it was neat enough but I didn't have a good place to carry it. I
decided to strap it to the top of my trunk.

Now my Silverwing is not the Interstate version; I don't have any saddlebags
yet.... just a shallow trunk on the very back. The trunk lid is pretty slick
because I keep the bike waxed and shiny. So how to deal with the problem?

I ended up packing the ribs in a large plastic garbage bag with a bunch of ice,
tying the bag into a knot so it wouldn't leak. I placed a folded bath towel on
the trunk, then the plastic bag, then another towel over the top (it was HOT
outside) for a little insulation from the sun. I bungeed the whole thing down.

Along the way, I stopped at one traffic light where this guy in the car behind
me kept bumping his horn. I turned around but couldn't see any reason for him
to be doing what he was doing. I was sitting at a "no left on red" traffic
arrow so I couldn't imagine what his problem was. When the light changed, I
gave it the gas and got onto the interstate.

When I got to my girlfriend's house, imagine the look on my face when I
discovered the only thing attached to my trunk was the bungee.

Well, I'm a much more mellow man at 54 than I was at 24. I laughed. 30 years
ago I'd still be cussing.

I learned about riding from that. If I don't have a better way to carry a load,
I'll take the car. In the meanwhile, the bike will just carry me.

As a final detail, I won some original Silverwing hard bags on EBay last Sunday.
They should show up tomorrow.... but even if I'd had them installed, I don't
think I'd have come out any differently with the size of this load. A backpack
would have worked if I'd thought about it. I will the next time.

<lol> You need one of these, probably available in most motorcycle
shops:

..and carry your ribs on the back of the seat.

Gearing up and getting your bike all set with the right accessories
takes time.

I saw a new one the other day. Guy on a HD Road King, with the
hardbags that open out was riding along with the hardbag cover open
and angled into the top of the hardbag, not strapped down that I could
see, was a Budweiser 12 pack, ...or 15 pack or whatever they are these
days.. less than a case/more than a 6 pack.

I'm pretty sure he knew that wasn't the best method of carrying that
beer, but where there's a will...

As I recall from when I started riding, anything you couldn't
figure out how to carry got stuffed inside your partially zipped
jacket.

It would have been an interesting ride anyway.
