The last person to change my oil severly overtightened the bolt that
holds the filter plate (for lack of better word to describe the
piece). (Triumph uses the same filter setup that my old Kawasaki zx-11
used). This is the only time in nearly 70,000 miles that I've had the
bike that I didn't change the oil. The problem first showed up when I
changed oil last week and then saw it leaking afterward. I've put 2
new o-ring sets (rings) in since then and the leak persists. I guess
my question is will I have this leak forever or will replacing the
plate fix this. I fear that the plate and the bottom of the case where
the plate seats against may have warped together and that only
replacing the plate will not fix it. It may now leak forever.
When I went to remove the plate (in the beginning), I couldn't get it
off with my socket wrench. I had to use a breaker bar. The torque for
that bolt is 13 ft/lbs which allows you easily to undo the bolt that
holds the plate. But that wasn't the case here.
Has anyone ever had this happen and was it repairable?
