A couple of weeks ago, a buddy of mine asked me if I thought his
co-worker's Concours 10 (ZG1000) with 15k miles on it, was a good
buy for $4500.  I said I thought that was a little high considering
you can get a Gen I FJR for not much more than that.  So I knew he
was thinking about getting another bike, in the sport-touring style.

I've heard you (and Turby) sing the praises of the ST1100 many times,
and having briefly owned one for a about 4 hours a few years ago (I
bought one for a friend who couldn't get off work when a good deal
came up), when I saw this one come up on my local Craigslist yesterday:

http://www.visi.com/~olsonm/fjr/91_ST1100.html
('91, $2400, 12.6k miles, one owner, well cared for, good condition)

I knew it wasn't going to last very long.  I was right- I called just
a few minutes after the ad was published, and was told I would be
first in line to check it out. Right after setting up the appointment
with the seller I called my friend to tell him he was buying a bike
that evening.  He was a little surprised at my insistence he drop
everything and grab the money, but he knew I wouldn't steer him wrong.

It's a good one.  Pilot Road 2 tires, nearly brand new.  It did have
a few very minor scratches in the clearcoat and a small crack in the
left knee panel, but overall it was in about the best condition you
could imagine for a 20 year old bike.  Ran like a top, no issues.
If my buddy hadn't bought it, I was going to.  He also opted to take
the Corbin saddle, too.

Just saw this.  The ST is a good bike.  91s came in black and silver.  The
silver is sought after, apparently there weren't that many of them.

I had a 91, silver.  I got run off the road by a drunk driver in '02, totaled
the bike with 104,000 miles on it.  It was just getting broken in good.  The
saying is "If you don't get 200k miles on it, you got a lemon".

ST people say the Connie is the poor man's ST.  It's similar but has buzzier
handlebars and they have a freak thing with their footpegs.  If you ever let it
tip over, it's going to break a peg.  Every time.

When I got back to work after my crash, I bought another ST, a 99 this time.  I
still have it.  Can't imagine riding anything else - except maybe a 650 V-strom.

Yeah, I remember a lot of talk about putting on different footpeg brackets
but in the 20k miles I had my 98 Connie I never dropped it.  It is a good
bike and you can do ridiculous miles on them, but compared to an ST or an
FJR it's totally outclassed.
