After a month of riding my S40 with its cruiser riding position
my lower back is complaining about the strain. It hurts to ride the
thing with my feet so far forward and the pain got steadily worse
until I can't even ride more than a mile at a time.

It's either got to get sold or the footpeg (and maybe seat) positions
modified, which I'd rather do since I like it a lot in other ways.

I feel most comfortable where the pegs are a few inches forward
of the lowest point in the seat, such as on the V-strom. I can't seem
to find a mid-controls conversion for the S40 so looks like I gotta
get creative with tools and scrap iron.

Have you considered a new seat ( Corbin, Russell, etc ) with
an adjustable rider backrest ? Sounds like you need lower lumbar
support.

Make sure you can easily change it back, for when you want to sell it to
the next croozer-dude...

Last bike change I was going to consider an S40.....until I saw the drag
bars. Didn't even sit on it as I have short arms.....and legs to, for that
matter.

You didn't mention reaching for the bars as a factor. Do you think it could
be?
I sure don't think I would be comfortable for very long with BOTH arms and
legs stretched out forward.

Do all the things the doctors traditionally recommend--lose weight, and do
abdominal and trunk exercises.

I'm assuming you're not 16 ...
