Just got an email from the sidecar people; they want Cdn$1595
for the 2nd hand (but unused) Velorex 562 plus $2455 installation
onto my Suzuki S40 which would include modifying the steering for
less trail.

However, this commits the bike for sidecar use only (unless I get
the original steering restored). The steering mod alone is $685.

So I could the keep the original front end geometry to make the sidecar
removable, but at the expense of more difficult steering. Is this
a good idea? (Does the sidecar need to be re-aligned every time it's
bolted back on?) Any help appreciated.

You should get another bike to use with the sidecar, could be older
and not fancy, maybe an older Beemer.

There is a California 2 on Ebay now.
Try riding with one before you make the bike unable to ride without it.

A nice K100 would be near the top of my list, though I'm
definitely not all that knowledgeable about sidecars.

I very much doubt you're going to want to convert a bike
back and forth.

Sidecars are still on the list of stuff I want to learn. While
Alcatraz moto was still in the bay area I kept promising
myself I'd take their sidecar course, but unfortunately
they moved before I got a round toit.

A sidecar on an S40??
Doesn't strike me as a very good idea, even if it required NO modifications.
At ~ 400 lbs. dry, I don't think the S40 would make a very good "anchor" for
a sidehack.
I'd be skeptical of frame strength too.
