Just bought an '85 R80RT
Back into riding after 20 years!

Bike runs well and idles well.....gear changes are clunky - but thats
a boxer for you.....change ups are no problem....but when changing
down to make a turn the revs drop so dramatically that if I am not
careful I can lock the back wheel as the clutch comes back in 3->2 or
2->1.......
so is this an adjustment thing (ie carb return spring or something????
- or just something I have to practise :)

- I had an R80 20 years ago and remember the agricultural gearbox but
dont remember change downs being quite so hard.....but memory fades
with age.....

Increasing the idle speed might help some but...........
It would appear that the main problem is shifting down at too high  a
speed......WAY too high if you are stopping.  Once you have scrubbed off
enough speed to be in 2nd gear, there's not much point is engaging the
clutch at all...... 3>2>1>stop.

Match the speed of the engine to the trans by using a throttle blip
just as you're about to let the clutch out.

It has an engine speed clutch. Take the changes slower and let the
clutch out with a bit of care.

<snip the usual>

Nonsense. He's just messing up the gear changes. He's already saying
they're clunky. On an '85 airhead boxer, that's a certain indication
that he's just rushing the changes. Take it smooth and slow and
they're much better.

It's got an engine speed clutch. Even with the lighter flywheels
fitted from the early 1980s, you're never going to get quick snappy
Japanese-type gear changes.

But hey, carry on peddling your non-existent fixes if it makes you
feel better.
