That would be overkill. Just an alphanumeric password would be enough
to keep drunks off the road.

You missed what I was after. I didn't mean a password that YOU set for your
car. What I mean is checking a database to be sure you are authorized by
the government to operate a vehicle.
The situation is really out of control. License suspensions seem to have no
effect in keeping dangerous people off the road.
The OP's story had a fairly happy ending. It can get a lot worse.
Permanent paralysis, brain death, organ donation, etc.

You ARE Big Brother. Dont you think the gov has more than enough control
over us already?

And neither would immobilisers in cars. Anything that can be electronically
enabled can be electronically disabled.
