I call bullshit. Electric door locks or no, there was some manual lever to
simply pull a latch and open the door.

Try it. Modern cars have deadlocks. If you're locked in, you have to
break the glass....

I'm not aware of any cars that don't have mechanical releases inside.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but can you name some of these cars? I
really an curious, mainly because it seems like a very bad idea. For
instance, the car starts on fire, and the power is lost to the door
locks...

My last Volvo. Many others - perhaps you should ask at your local car
showroom about the security features.
You could carry a hammer/belt cutter if you expect to be in a French vehicle
when the driver walks away with the key in his pocket.
