Because we (U.S.A.) have a DOT and an EPA.

My Enfield Bullet (India) has a chrome gas tank - the whole tank - and the
chrome is still great after 10 years. By contrast, both my american cars
have plastic bumper covers and new H-Ds are painted 'cuz one cannot chrome
anything here. Wonder why all the manufacturing jods went overseas to India
and China? 'Cuz they don't have EPAs and DOTs? Naw, it's more PC to blame
unions ....

You think EPA is the one preventing 125 CC (100+ MPG) motorcycles from
selling in the US? Give me a break.

I agree jobs DO move overseas because this allows manufacturers to
circumvent environmental laws. (Just as the DVD piracy and handbag
knockoff factories are overseas to circumvent intellectual property
laws.) The solution? Quit importing goods whose manufacturers don't
meet *our* minimum standards for environmental protection. This would
put Americans back on an even playing field AND protect the environment.

All the news stories about China trying (in vain) to clear their air for
the Olympics have convinced me like never before that dropping
environmental protections to boost manufacturing is the wrong answer!

Arm or leg?

As you know EPA requires that vehicles sold here meet certain emissions and
noise standards. Meeting these standards costs money and proving that you
can meet them requires expensive testing. It costs the same to test a
$15,000 bike as a $1500 bike. So, while EPA does not say "No 125s" their
rules have exactly that effect.

Who do you think is keeping 125s out of the US?

-----------

And yet look on any website selling Chinese motorcycles in the US and you
will find plenty 0f 50cc bikes. Go figure.

And since the guys selling the $1,500 bike will probably sell ten of
their cheapies for every one of the $15,000 bikes that moves, it costs
the importers of the small displacement bike no more in proportion
than it does the expensive bike's importers. (They don't test each
individual bike, silly person, they test a sample of each model.)

Apparently the laws of economics are a new concept for you. Too bad.

The importers themselves, who could get just about *any* bike imported
from the makers if they thought they could sell enough of 'em here to
make it worth doing.

But they don't.
