:One guy carried a plastic baggy of sliced carrots and he got the
:nickname
:Carrot Stick Henry". He would *never* spend his shekels on lunch.

I don't eat while riding. For me, it is contrary to staying awake
and alert. Ninety minutes after eating, I need a ninety minute nap.

Orange juice at a coffee shop breakfast or a salad at a sit down lunch
goes through me like grass through a goose. But a $1 bargain menu BK
burger and a coke is no problem.

I need to be near a restroom 45 minutes after orange juice or salad,
or else...

One of my riding partners always wanted to pig out at the Sizzler
salad bar in Goleta on Sundays. It's a lovely Sizzler, the patio is
built around a 300-year old sycamore tree that they didn't want to cut
down.

He would go back to the salad bar five times to my one and never gain
weight.

Fortunately, the Danish-style village of Solvang is about 45 minutes
up Hwy 101, and Hwy 154 is a nice loop back to Santa Barbara.

Eat to Ride, Ride to Eat was his motto...

Back in the late 1970's, I toured the Oregon coast. My supposedly-
comfortable
custom saddle was cutting me in two, and I prayed that I would find
any fast food chain and just relax in a booth for an hour.

Alas, there was *no* fast food on that coast, but the situation has
changed.

I guess it goes to show how different we all are.. different strokes..

For me, I love the feel of diners, even when the food isn't all that
great.

I rate my diners on three key quality items.

* Food
* Waitresses
* Motorcycle Parking

Not necessarily in that order.

I don't like expensive and I don't like long either, but maybe we just
got a lot of those old traditional New England "Worcester" diners up
here in New England where you can still get a great breakfast for
under $5 and an excellent burger with fries and a coke and even desert
for a sawbuck and be in and out in 20 minutes.

(burp! oh! excuse me!)

I used to rub elbows with movie stars at the Gower Gulch Denny's
coffee shop, but  they upgraded the art deco 1950's furnishings to
attract more celebrity-types, so I quit going there.

Mom and Pop diners are fast disappearing as Generica wraps its fast
food chains around every avenue and boulevard. And the inter-chain
competition is so fierce that Denny's and IHOP are now declaring
"breakfast wars" on MacDonalds and BK. They now have walkup windows to
expedite take-out service and they are experimenting with menu items
for "dashboard dining".

The upside for the jaded consumer will be lower prices on breakfast
menu items...
