Uh, you mean to say that New Zealand cops obey all the laws all the
time?

I'm asking seriously, because American cops have *always* been known
for ignoring the law whenever it suits them to do so.

Yep....a cop last year pulled a 3 point turn to chase a speeding bike in
the Buller gorge. He didn't look and collected two bikes. He's going to
court. A local cop crashed his plainclothes car after drinking.....no
cover up, just busted like everyone else.

As much as I laugh about cops, their uniform demands respect, if not the
laws they enforce.I've never been busted for something I didn't do.

The only time I can think of a cop being given some slack was when a
country cop (sole charge) attended a fatal car smash on his day off,
with life saving gear. When the town cops turned up for backup they
smelt alcohol and breathalised him......he had been drinking and was
over the limit. So, like most people I thought "fair enough too" when he
was discharged without conviction. His good outweighed his bad.

Then after the court case it comes out the guy that caused the crash had
just left the cops place after a drinking session........

(BEEP!) Give the man a cigar!

And as a result, our arrestee now probably has good grounds for a
false-arrest suit.

Not lawyers. IMHO, this was posturing for the local
voters. Local elected officials can go through all kinds
of buffoonery if they think it'll earn them a couple of
good headlines. Hopefully this backfires on the sheriff
come election time.
