some would argue that atheism is a religion in it's own right.

Not having a religion is like not having a bicycle. You don't say that
someone without a bicycle just has an unusual form of bicycle ownership,
they just don't have one. What's so hard to understand about that?

A mathematician would put it that way.

But you define a religion as having some sort of deity to worship. In my
opinion, what defines a religion is that the people that practice that
religion have a very strict belief that they share and which is
beyond discussion, and usually there is no objective proof supporting
that belief.

In that sense, atheism is a religion, the shared belief being that there is
no such deity.

Bingo. "In my opinion".

But asking a religious person to define atheism is akin to asking
someone born blind to describe the northern lights. He simply doesn't
have the tools to do the job, so all he can do is repeat things he's
heard from others, who also don't own the tools.

Besides; atheists aren't going to allow theists to define atheism any
more than theists allow athiests to define their religions.
