I just got my 04 Touring Service Manual and I will say the quality is
excellent. At first glance it seems to capture the simple procedures
as well as the more advanced stuff. The pictures are far clearer than
any Haynes or Clymer manual I have seen.
The HD manual is not cheap but I think it will pay for itself in short
order.

I don't think you'll be needed to take your bike to the dealer at all.
I have a friend with the same bike as yours. He's pretty non-
mechanical, and he even replaced his cam own chain tensioners!
I like 'em better than any Haynes or Chiltons because usually Hanes/
Chiltons lump way too many bikes/years together in 'em, making every
procedure difficult and even causing errors.

Well the manual is clear, concise and well thought out. I am not sure
my mechanical talents are on the same level.
I'll start with the simple stuff and work my way up. I am hoping I
don't have to go after the cam chain tensioners until next winter. I
have heard that after 25,000 miles or so you are in risky territory.
What are your thoughts on the gear driven cams? I have read they have
run out issues and sometimes cause an irritating gear whine.

Mine inner tensioner was needing replacement at about 32,000 miles, so
25,000 miles would be a good time to check 'em.

I put them in my bike about a year ago. Not as quiet as the chains,
but by no means irritating. I like the fact that I never have to think
about tensioners again.
