Waaaaahhhhh , waaaaaaahhhhh , waaaaaahhhhhh , shut up ya whiny little bitch

We went from fairly nice temps and rain here to the high 90's ... last I
looked we've set record highs for like 5days in a row . Not a good way to
start summer here , where late July/August is usually the hottest. Oh well ,
all we can do is hope for the best , and make do with what Ma Nature hands
us. I found that a fairly heavy long sleeved khaki shirt soaked with water
and covered with a vest or light jacket helps a lot - for a hundred miles or
so.

... or go for a ride along a damn big lake, which is what I did today
to pick up some oh-so-elegant iridium tipped spark plugs for
Geraldine. The whole area was under a heat advisory. I considered
hunkering down in the house with the windows shut on the theory that
my being out at my advanced age would be prima facie evidence of
senility, but the more I thought about it, the more that seemed like a
perfectly legitimate excuse, so off I went anyway.
Lo and behold, the Penguin Drive in at Manitowoc, WI, has reopened:

This is the place where all the hot rod enthusiasts of years gone by
(who are my age) hang out, and there they were, big as life and twice
as natural, as though the place hadn't been shut up for a year. I had
the blue-plate special: a sumptuous serving of meatloaf with mashed
potatoes and gravy, vegetables and cottage cheese on the side, and
coffee. I'm not sure they called it that, but it was served on what
was an incredibly blue plate.
The place was brighter and cleaner than I remembered it. I was
tempted to look behind a couple of the framed photos of local race
cars to see whether they had taken them off the wall to paint it
because all the pictures were exactly where I remembered their being.
It was just the thing for a sweltering afternoon -- only it wasn't
sweltering. I had crisscrossed SR 42, a north/south thoroughfare,
several times on county roads because SR 42 is closed for construction
all the way from Howards Grove, WI, to Manitowoc. I could tell
exactly how far from the lake I was on my back and forth excursions by
how hot it was inland. However, at Manitowoc and along CTH LS, the
lakeshore drive back to Sheboygan, WI, it was pleasantly cool. In
fact the fog was blowing in about tree-top level though you could see
under it and the sun shone through it.
