You know something? I don't believe for one *moment* that they really
think that. Or ever have.

If psychology -and advertising- have taught us anything at all, it's
that people in general revel in the ability to exert their power on
the rest of the population...a population that they consider "other".
The old cliche about absolute power being absolutely corrupting didn't
become an old cliche without good reason.

The rationalized "it's for your own good" stuff comes as an
afterthought, when those in power need to make themselves feel good
about the things they've done.

Well, that's some real nice, fancy psycho-babble there, but there's a
much simpler, common, concrete setting that explains the origin:
Parents.

Too bad Twibil had snipped down my original but that "feel good" was in regard
to the Inquisition.
