You can't take away religion without providing something in its place.
Commies tried very hard to do so, and they succeeded. You probably will
have difficulties in understanding what I'm trying to say, but Commies
could replace religion with ideology. They were pretty good at stuff
like that, so it worked. But then they lost, and there was a gaping
void in human minds, which was very quickly occupied with various
parasitic concepts. Magic healers, Krishna sects, strange churches,
nationalism, you name it. In Poland it wasn't very bad, because we kept
the faith, so to speak, but for example Russians went damn crazy at one
time.

Some have described human nature as having a God-sized hole - one that
cannot be left empty, so it must be filled with something. In
addition to the alternatives you mentioned, drugs, alcohol and
debauchery are also candidates; which tend to tear apart a country and
its society. Under those destructive influences families break apart,
children grow up with the pain of it, reach out to anything to ease
the pain and the cycle descends deeper with the next generation.
Cynicism, hate and resentment eventually replace love, trust and a
sense of duty.

It bears sort of a strange coincidence to what's been happening in
North America, in fact.

Funny, though, how so many people seem to do just fine
without "filling that hole" with ANY of the "alternatives" mentioned.

It may be that the whole notion that there IS such a "hole"
in the first place, and that for some reason it "needs to be
filled," is a societal thing, something you are taught, rather
than any actual inherent need.

I'm not so sure. You left out the 'fillers' that Andrezej mentioned,
like ideology. Political ideologies, for instance. And perhaps, with
religion filling that void, it tends to moderate ideology. One of the
strengths of America is that, as a nation, you have tended to be quite
solution-oriented and pragmatic, while other nations have swept away
with questionable ideologies, taking them down paths which didn't
help.

Or it may just be a conclusion drawn, based on observing how humans
behave. And it's a conclusion that could be arrived at whether your a
theist or an atheist, in fact.

I didn't include those in the material quoted, but when
I said "ANY of the alternatives mentioned," I most
definitely meant any which had been mentioned by
anyone so far.

I don't think people have to be ideologically driven - to
the extent of a given ideology overruling rational
thought - whether that ideology is based in a religious
or secular belief.
