On a Vision Quest, I communed with Quan Yin, Bodhisattva of Motorcycles.
"What is it you seek," she asked. "Wisdom, insight, or perhaps
heightened perception?"
"No, I'm looking for a Triumph Bonneville," I replied.
The demigoddess sighed, with mixed expressions of sadness and
compassion. "You are about 40 years too late," she said.
"They make them in Hinckley--" I began, when she raised her hand,
palm outward to silence me.
"I'm afraid that time has passed you by," she said. "The Hinckley
product, through some styling cues has perhaps the outer form
of the original Bonneville, but lacks the pure essence. The man who
lets himself be deceived by appearances lives in darkness, just as
you would if you acquired a Meriden Bonnie with Lucas electrics."
"Is there no hope, then," I asked.
"Why don't you state your real desires, cast aside any preconceptions
and let form serve function, rather than the reverse."
"Very well," I said. "I already have a touring bike I really enjoy.
Now I feel bound to the Wheel of Desire for a performance machine,
and here's what I seek:
* quick acceleration
* good handling -- nimble cornering
* tuned for canyon carving and street biking, not track racing
* light weight
* comfortable -- neutral seating position
"Post your question on Reeky," she said, dissolving into a sweet
smelling cloud of jasmine incense smoke, "...and ask about Erik Buell,"
were her final words.
