I was there at the time.
There was more than just friction.
It was ugly, real ugly.

It was all a bit Clockwork Orange really.
Characatures fighting each other.

I was going to mention the Mods vs Rockers thing but Albrecht beat me
to it.  Scooters were very 'in' in the 60s for geeky guys.  They
dressed them up with as many as 20 rearview mirrors and lots of
chrome.

I was on a day trip last year, way out in the country, following a
road that winds along a meandering river, when I saw about 30 scooters
coming the other way.  Apparently they were some kind of organized
tour.  I waved at all of them, and some waved back.  They couldn't see
the huge grin inside my full-face helmet.  I was thinking at the time
that my first bike was a scooter, a Lambretta, which I used to take on
long day trips.  But you don't see that much anymore.

I remember looking at a used Bergman 400 at my dealer.  The thing had
a longer wheel base than my "real" motorcycle.  I think it also had
more cargo capacity than the Geo Metro I used to have.

I wonder at what point the scooter designation is a mere technicality
because some of the silverwings have the same size engine as my bike.

I've seen some very cool scooter vids and I don't think I'll ever be
making fun of them.
