I already have a Kryptonite cable lock (probably 1/2 inch thick). I
was once told these are uncuttable, but I find that hard to believe.
Would a chain lock like the Kryptonite Fagetaboutit (sp) be better?
What are the best locks?

No lock is uncuttable.  A cordless Dremel rotary tool with a reinforced cutoff
wheel will defeat any lock, chain or cable you could feasibly carry on a
motorcycle.  The best you can hope for is to discourage the casual thief.
Professional thieves will lift the bike up and stuff it into a van, so unless
you lock the bike to something, most locks and chains won't even slow them down.

I concur with Mark Olson.

I purchased a cordless moto-tool several months ago on sale.  It only has
one rechargeable battery with it.

It only _needs_ one battery for the casual user.  I was very surprised at
how much energy is in the battery and how long the thing can run.

I concur with Mark that it would easily make it through any lock available
(on one battery), although it might take a couple minutes.

I don't think stranded cable would mess with it too much.  A clever thief
would probably bend the cable and cut the convex side so that the cut
strands don't interfere with continued cutting.  I think it would go through
it like butter.

And I'm just a guy who found a cool tool on sale at Lowe's.  The
professional thieves might know even quicker ways to defeat locks.

Locking it to something might be more effective than locking it to nothing
(but it will just slow the professionals down).

My personal approach is to have an inexpensive motorcycle.  : )

But yeah, I don't think anything you can buy will survive a cordless
moto-tool.

Uncuttable?  Maybe in a reasonable time period.

Unpickable?  Not even close.

Look on Youtube, you will find all manner of Kryptonite cable locks
being picked in under 30 seconds.
