Well I finally have some more free time and found an open terminal
here at Java One, so I thought I'd give you a detailed report of my
rental experience.
So I pick up the bike about 3pm Saturday and immediately hit the Bay
Bridge for a quick 50 mile ride to see my old college roommate.
Dear lord, this bike handles like shit, it is down right scary and
feels unsafe to ride. The front tire wants to follow every
imperfection in the road. Any rough pavement and the front end
shakes. I am not making this up.
Oh and it vibrates in the seat and pegs. Well at least the power is
adequate.
The next day I take it down the PCH and through the Santa Cruz
mountains. The handling only gets worse. Any bumps in a turn and the
bike becomes completely unsettled. The roads are beautiful and twisty
and yet I am riding in a state of terror. I am sure the thing will
bounce off the road at any moment.
What is with forward controls? What a stupid riding position. You
see a big bump coming and you can't stand on the pegs so your lower
back takes the brunt of the impact. Ouch. And you have to take your
foot off the peg to apply the rear brake. That is just unsafe.
The single disk up front is best described as anemic. I don't have
one good thing say about the rental, the absolutely worst bike I have
ever ridden.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the rental place gave me a 2007 Honda
Shadow Aero 750. The 883 Sportster I had reserved "wasn't running
right" according to the clerk. Go figure.
So my disdain for metric croozers continues.

So what in your report do ya think would've been
different had it not been "metric"?

I'd hope that the handling, brakes and riding position would be an
improvement. After all I can't imagine they could be any worse than
the Honda.

And does the 2007 Aero still have a single disc on the front and drum
brakes on the rear?

So I now see why you might curse me for steering you to those
couple of interesting little back roads. If I'd known you'd be on a
genyouwine cruiser I might not have. I'd kind of figured you'd be
on a big twin with a normal upright riding position.
No videos of the ride I suppose ? :-)
