My son and I took a ride this AM and it's never complete unless we
stop at the Harley dealer and our local Hon/Kaw/Suz/Yam dealer.
The HD dealer didn't have one Sportster on the floor. In fact, they
only had a couple of 96CI bikes, with the rest being 110CI Screaming
Eagles.
They sold out of Sportsters and most of the 96CI bikes! And they
always, always had at least one row, if not 2 or 3, of Sportsters of
every ilk on hand from reg ones to nightsters etc.
I really liked those Bobbers and a few other bikes with the 110CI
engines.
Next up was the Hon/Yam/etc dealer. They didn't have one scooter - not
a 250cc, not a 400cc, not a 49cc, not an 80cc - all of them had been
sold.
They were completely sold out of Kaw 250 Ninjas, the retail of which
goes up next week to $4800 with some going privately for $5500 on
craigslist!!!!! The salesguy with whom we've dealt before - son bought
a cruiser from him - said that they are sold out 2 months ahead of
time on those bikes.
They didn't have any cruisers in stock less than 1300cc - no 250's,
500's, 600's, 750's, 805's, 900's - none. Those small-med crusiers
were the bulk of what was on the showroom floor and now they have
none.
The latest AMA mag has an article on how dealers can not keep Kaw
Ninja 250's and scooters in stock; well, seeing is believing.
Sounds like people are spending $10K on bikes and $6K on scooters to
save 30-50% of their petro bill.
