I went to Wal Mart to pick up a few things today, and everybody
seemed to notice me and my Nighthawk. Some were smiling, some giving
me the thumbs up, and one woman said, "that looks like fun!", but
everybody seemed to be envious. Maybe it was the weather (80s),
maybe it was the stock market rebound, maybe it was my personality.
Maybe my zipper was down (I checked - it wasn't).
On the way home, I kept waiting for some guy to pull up and say,
"man, I wish I was you" so I could tell him to "hang in there."
Maybe if I traded for a Sportster...

I had some unexpected experiences bringing the Suzuki Katana back from
Orlando. Along the way in a couple places I had boys under 10 wanting to
examine the motorcycle. They were all from families stopped at rest stops.
Surprisingly, none of the dads said "Son, those are dangerous" or "We're
never going to let you get one of those". All the dads were patient and let
the boys be boys.
I guess the talk about "Son, those are dangerous" comes as one gets nearer
to driver's license age.

It does? Never got that conversation. I did get a "if you don't pay
attention to the bike and traffic it's going to hurt a lot" talk but
that's about it. Well that and the "Wearing a helmet is the smartest
thing to do when riding"
Other than that? Nope no negativity from my family. Granted my
paternal grandparents rode regularly into the early 60's. Many cousins
on both sides of the law rode or still ride. Hell I've heard my mother
who only rarely rode pillion lay into a dad who was giving his son the
"the aren't safe" talk. Ripped him a new one with the truth...a
motorcycle is only as unsafe as the moron riding it. 8^) My mom is the
coolest!

I just assumed that all parents gave their kids the "motorcycles aren't
safe" talk.
All of the points you made are valid; but I think the stats show that a
motorcycle is about 5 times as dangerous per mile as a car. Also, closed
head injuries are inordinately represented. And then combine that with how
a 16-18-year old is likely to operate a motorcycle ... overall not a great
combination.
I personally would like to see [American] football and pro boxing banned as
sports.
Football ... there are a couple thousand serious neck and spinal injuries
per year at the high-school level alone. Fortunately, the vast majority of
them don't result in permanent disability ... but it happens.
Pro boxing ... getting hit too many times has effects on the brain.
I respect the fact that boys will be boys and men will be men. But I'd
prefer to keep the sports to those that usually result in simple fractures
only. Basketball, tennis, soccer, etc. seem a bit safer than football or
riding a motorcycle.
As much as possible ...
