When is the rear tire (08-Nomad) needing to be replaced?  It's sorta got =
no tread in the middle of the tire, but the sides have a lot of tread, =
almost like new.  I'm approaching 7000 miles on the original tires.

If you have no tread in the middle, you need to replace it.  Unless
you're an agressive sportbike rider, the sides don't wear much.  7,000
miles is reasonable mileage on a rear tire.

When the wear indicators are flush with the tread.  When there's no
tread grooves at all (where there used to be grooves) it's gone
beyond that point and should be replaced asap, even though there's
plenty of tread in other areas.

This page has a couple of pictures showing tread wear indicators and
the markers on the sidewall that point you toward them.
