So, having decided to sell the ST4 that I bought last winter (lovely
bike, just don't ride it enough to justify it) and having gotten the
race trailer and bikes out of sight (if not out of mind) I am, yes,
thinking of pulling the trigger again.
This time is is another moldie-oldie repeat that is murmering away at
my subconscious. A near perfect Yamaha SR500 thumper, to be exact.
I have owned two of these in the past, one a hot-rod that I built, and
another a near-stocker that I bought, fixed up, and sold while I still
had the hot-rod.
With the hot-rod, I went too far fro streetability, and ruined it for
casual use. The guy I sold it to turned it into a vintage racer.
Some of you may recall that I bought it back and later re-sold it for
the same reason I did in the first place - too high-strung for normal
street use.
But this one I'm considering is stock and original down to the exhaust
and reflectors on the bike. Always has been kept indoors, it is in
better condition than even the hotrod was.
I'm giving my 1967 Honda CL90 to my niece for her birthday next month,
so between that and selling off the ST4, there will be plenty of room
in the garage. And, I'll buy the bike with cash, fly out to the
owner's place, and ride it back: a nice 2-3 day ride on an old kick-
start-only thumper should be the cat's meow, don't you agree?

Sounds like a terrific plan Tim. I hope the bike is in good shape and
there are no surprises when you get there.
Enjoy the ride.

Ditto
Since selling the EX250 and the GSF400, I'm down to three bikes
now, and since Progressive will let me have four on a policy,
it's only a matter of time until I do something similar. I liked
riding my buddy's SR500 a lot, but will probably opt for a
dual-sport in the end.

I absolutely love those Yamaha thumpers.
And one day I will own another.
Yiou need a knack to start them, they're anything but fast in stock
trim, the handling needs bars and suspension sorting before they're
truly good, the stock exhaust needs throwing in the nearest bin[1], but
OhMyGod they're fun.
[1] Sorry, sounding like a self-appointed expert here.

Nothing damages a machine more than an ignoramus with a manual, a
can-do attitude and a set of cheap tools

What do you want for the ST4? What upgrades are on it? Any suspension kit?
I am thinking I would like that bike :-) And I would get to ride from VA to
WA on it.
