When was the "great gun confiscation"? I must have missed it. And if the
"standard travel item" isn't a hand gun what is it?

It was when Australia (NSW in particular) decided to follow England's
path.
I never said the standard travel item wasn't a hand gun. Don't you
carry things you usually don't need? I also carry tools, my papers,
and a few other odds and ends that I rarely need.

I once rode my Ducati from Palmerston North to new Plymouth (2 1/2
hours) with a Mossberg 8-shot pump action slung over my shoulder. Top
that with a ski mask and a fibreglass 'German' helmet. Funny how people
look at you differently sometimes........

Yep, the local hunting magazines had pictures showing dumptrucks full of
firearms awaiting destruction. A mate in Aussie made a valid comment
though.....as it was a 'buy back', a lot of people took their
older/crappier firearms in for a payout and then went and brought new
(read ex-army SLR L1A1's) ones.

Wet weather gear and a spare pair of socks/boxers under the seat, and a
credit card in my pocket is my traveling kit. I don't get enough time
off to spend more than three days on the road.
The ute is the other way around....it's got one of everything you need
for a weekend away.....including the rabbit gun.

Positive :) It was a lovely day and I was on my way home with my
new 'toy' after spending the weekend at Linton army barracks.
When I pulled into the Kai Iwi pub carpark, the owner came out and said,
'Can I help you with that'.....as i got off my bike. I said 'Sure, can
you put it behind the bar for me' and passed him the shotgun. He smiled,
cycled it to make sur it was empty and said, 'Iv'e got one just like
this' and took me inside and pulled his out from under the bar. It was
loaded with Italian plastic '00's' riot shot.
The funny part was when I left. The owner had gone out the back for
something, so I asked the barmaid to pass me my shotgun.....she picked
it up from behind the bar and gave it to me.....as I was walking out the
door, she said to one of the guiys at the bar 'Isn't that 'bar owners'
gun...?'.......If it was, it would have been too late by
then.....blonde's (rolling eye's)
