2006 Suzuki Katana 600 with electronic digitial odometer.
For no apparent reason, the darned thing was blinking hyphens ("-----") on
the LCD digital display for a few hundred miles, then it cleared up and it
is working normally now.
Is this an error indicator of some kind?
Why? What?
Thanks.

Hopefully the answer is in your factory service manual.
Was the speedometer working normally?

Unfortunately, I don't own a service manual yet. (Bought the bike with 0
miles just a month or so ago.) Will buy the official one soon.
Speedo and tach were working normally. When the malfunction occurred, I
went through the same thought process you did. My thoughts were:
a)Is the same wheelspeed encoder (or whatever) used for both the odometer
and speedometer? (That is why I remembered that the speedometer was working
properly.)
b)Is this a more sinister problem, is the bike safe to operate, and will
something else fail?
For (b), I came to conclusion that the failure was benign. The bike may
have electronic ignition, but I couldn't immediately think of any
commonality between that and the odometer. I don't think wheelspeed
encoding comes into play for electronic ignition.
To be honest, I was really surprised that the odometer came back, and seemed
to have recorded the miles in the interim. I thought I was looking at an
infant mortality on the odo and that it would have to be replaced.
I need to find out what the flashing dashes mean ...

Also, as soon as I noticed it, at some point I tried turning the ignition
off and then back on again. That didn't help. The odo went through display
proveout (all segments on), but then promptly went back to the flashing
dashes.

Perhaps it's the flux capacitor. You didn't slow beyond 88mph did you?
