Since ATT is being a jerk, I switched to eternal-september.org for free so
far.  I guess this is working?

Same boat here.  Server seems to be slower as expected.  It
is just one more way for AT&T to shuck a responsibility and
institute a price hike via reduced cost.  It would be nice
if they would give back the the $10.mo for usenet that was
itemized on my original Bellsouth bills.  They did nicely
point out in the most recent message that third party
vendors charge for this service - as if AT&T did not have it
hidden in the bill somewhere!  Not much chance they will
ever reduce the monthly access fee to cover the reduced
service.

AT&T can kiss my ass , I went to Comcast . 4X faster downloads (8X with the
power boost thingy , they say ...) and I don't lose my connection every time
it rains .
I'm currently using Tera's free news server , but I've heard that Forte's
APN newsserver is great for the three bucks a month . I'll be switching as
soon as I can get a Round Tuit . Just haven't taken the time yet , Tera is
great for like binaries , if that's all you use it for . I find it becomes a
bit of a chore sometimes , it seems to log me out after a little while . But
it *IS* free ... and doesn't limit upload/download size as I've heard
motzarella/eternal-september does .
