There you go. The next time I replace the chain I will leave it dry and ride
around the lab a few times.

I believe the 'best' cleaner for o ring chain longevity is kerosene per
DID and a lot of other chain manufacturers recommendation.
I believe the 'best' lube for longevity to be the graphite based lubes.
Although oil on demand by the drop while riding (
http://www.hawkeoiler.com/index.html ) is awesome for long distance
rides as no vacuum adjustment to worry about ( ala scott oiler ) and
you just just lube a couple of drops every tank as you pull out of the
gas station.
A little messy but very effective and cleans up easy with the kerosene.

Did they have documentation to back this up or were they justifying their lack
of maintenance?

On my Bandit 600, I got over 20K miles on each of my past 2 chains with
nothing but WD40. I hardly ever clean it, either, I just spray on
more every so often.
