Last Thursday evening we had a winter rain in the area. By midnight,
some freezing caused us to lose power. We woke up here in the AM in
north central Massachusetts, as did much of inland New England from
Connecticut through Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, to more than a
1/2 inch of ice coating everything. More tree damage than is possible
to imagine.

Massive infrastructure damage to the entire grid, and especially in
the rural areas. It took more than 48 hours after the storm for many
people just to be able reach primary roads in these little New England
villages. The larger cities were is a similar situation. Schools are
still being used for shelters, as people have been without power now
for over a week. No power for most of us means new water or sewerage
as we all have wells and septic systems, very little city provided
water services.

I finally bought a power generator on Monday, and found a L14-3 power
lug for it on Tuesday to wire it into my breaker box. I was up and
running on the gas by Thursday and got power back today. The phone
lines were never down at my house, and then Comcast came back today.

It hasn't been fun. The power generator and the snowblower now are the
first tier of machines in the garage, as we await another 8 to 12
inches tonight and more through the weekend. The Harley and Valkyrie
sit quietly blanketed behind the "survival" machines.

Thank you God, for the internal combustion engine.

No more riding for me, unless we get a major change in weather
patterns for quite some time. I hope you guys in warmer places do a
good job making up for the miles I'm not getting. Go ahead, rub it in.

It's on the way. The white stuff just started here in the Finger Lakes,
and it is already "moderate-to-heavy." The weatherguessers are saying
two inches per hour, all day and evening. Wind and drifting later in the
day. None of the schools even bothered to open this morning.

The snowblower is ready. No generator here, but we do have an emergency
kerosene heater.  <g>

Got another inch here in sunny California last night, more coming.
I test rode my new (to me) snowmobiles yesterday, way fun. They will make
winter just another way to ride. We are towing them 30 miles up the hill to
the snowmobile zone at Bear Valley Sunday.

We are getting an added 12 inches of snow from this storm tonight and
more predicted for Sunday.

Oh joy!
