Hi Guys,
Anyone know where to look up VINs for bikes earlier than 1980?
Also, how early the previous year would a bike be built then sold as
the next years model?
For example, I have a Yamaha DT250 titled as a '76, yet it was
manufactured in March of '75.
I know the new bikes come out late Summer early Fall for the next
year, so if the frame sticker says manufactured in '75, could it be a
'76 bike?
Thanks,
Tim

Yes: join an owner's club or the VJMC, which offers a dating service.
Failing that (if you don't want to spend money on membership dues),
google for the engine number. Google for an enthusiast's site: a lot
of these have VIN and engine numbers listed, cross-referenced against
yars of manufacture.

If it was made in March 1975, then unlikely. But there might not have
been any changes between 1975 and 1976 models anyway.
And the Japanese don't always announce new models late the preceding
year, although it's certainly the trend. I mean, the new V-Max has
just been announced, hasn't it?

Do they check if you and your potential date's motorcycle are
compatible? :)
