Got a question about the Virago starter gear train.
This morning mine refused to start. The solenoid was pulling in and
when viewed through the oil fill port the bendix gear was sliding over
towards the starter ring and the gear train was spinning.
I pulled the l.h. sidecover off to look for obvious trouble but I couldn't
find anything too obvious save for the rubber shoulder of the idler gear
was falling apart. A piece of this rubber was jammed into the helical gear
which seemed to be keeping the idler from sliding over far enough to
engage the starter ring.

So I shaved off the rubber, which only turned out to be adhered to the
face of the gear. Starter works fine now.

So my question is this, by removing the rubber shoulder am I asking for
trouble?

So you're wondering if it's one of those ornamental parts that we all
know should be discarded at the first opportunity ? :-) One way to
find out I guess.

You mean that I wasn't supposed to have extra bolts left over?

Not a problem. They're called "Whizz bits" and come as standard with all
stripped down motors.

They just serve to point out these machines were over engineered in
the first place.
