Dumb question:  what happens if an air cleaner element is missing?  Or if
there is a big crack somewhere in the ducts after the air cleaner?

I'm assuming that you get particulate matter (dust and worse) in the engine
and eventually bad things happen.

What bad things?  How long does it take?

Scoring of the cylinders.
Problems with crank bearings.
Bad shit.  It depends where you live.  If you live in the desert, it can
happen quick.

Depends whether you ride on dusty roads often. Accelerated piston, ring
and bore wear, anyway. Some fine grit will inevitably find its way into
the oil, accelerating wear on other components, but the piston(s) etc
will be the first casualties.

The other problem is a lean mixture - more air is being sucked in for
the same amount of fuel. I think that FI systems can, to a degree,
compensate for this but carbs generally can't.

So you'll have an engine that runs hotter and is more prone to pinking.
Worst case is a holed piston.

Are you telling us that you managed to lose the air filter unit and
break the ducting during one of your ill-advised servicing episodes? ;-)

Try Googling before asking a damn silly question.

To put this in perspective, many of my first bikes didn't come with air
cleaners but engines didn't last 200,000+ miles like they do now either. We
typically rode under 10,000 mi/yr and generally "freshened up" the top end
every winter.
