I'm going to set myself for abuse but I thought I'd put this out
there. I have two daughters 4 and 1 1/2 and I gave up my Honda Hawk
NT650 (hawk8242, real original, right, I know already:) about two
years ago. Every time I'm in the dumps I want a bike again. Before
everyone starts calling me a .ussy and why I should never have given
it up, I'd say that I was never that good of a rider and I was never
that good mechanically either. I was so smart that after I swapped in
an F2 front end I was riding around for over a year with a leaky
fork! No wonder I didn't feel the dual rotors improve my breaking.
So everyone is probably much safer on the roads without me. So that
said, is there anyone out there who gave up riding and picked up
something else that really really replaced it successfully? I'm
hanging my hopes on bicycle riding, but sometimes I think it'll work
and sometimes I don't. I live in NYC and I really don't enjoy riding
my bicycle on the streets here that much. At least the motorcycle
used to get me on the highways and out of the city easily enough.
I have an suv now and I try to avoid being an idiot cager...
Thanks in advance. I got my first bike in '94 because of the advice I
got in this group and I really appreciate the discussions here (well I
used to anyway, haven't checked in a long time).

Go play with the kids maybe ? Baby daughters are pretty
special. Enjoy them while they're still little and don't feel
bad about the bike. Plan on getting another bike when
the kids are a little older and more independent.

Rollerblading maybe ? After work sports league ?
Otherwise the bike sounds like the best bet.

From what I remember of Manhattan, an SUV in the city might
qualify you as an idiot before you even drove it.

Best advice you'll ever get.
Kids will turn into monsters soon then you'll really want a bike.
Til then, enjoy.

I'll ditto that. Spend time with the kids, they grow up fast!
If you really need the bike fix, get a rental (or a cheapie road legal
trailbike for the shed)
The problem with a young family is there is usually a lack of spare
money for any hobbies....go for the freebies like
tramping, swimming, cycling to get out of the house.

People I know who got burned out on riding to the same hangout and
patrolling the same back roads on their motorcycles every weekend took
up target shooting and bicycling.
I added hill running and peak bagging to the bicycling, since I live
close to the mountains.
But, every once in a while, I take one of my motorcycles out and see
what changes are happening to the countryside where I have ridden for
decades.

Get a bike rack and haul the motorcycle to New England or upstate NY
and ride
country roads.
Maybe you can find a bicycle club that does 50 and 100 mile rides
together.
If your joints aren't old and creaky, run laps around Central Park.
